Palm Beach PopStar Vocal Competition
Begins September 1, 2010
Now transitioning into an ambitious vocal competition, Palm Beach PopStar is building on an unprecedented number of talented singers in South Florida. Palm Beach PopStar is a community event open to local amateur singers ages 18 and up, to give a talented singer the chance of a lifetime to sing with a full orchestra on stage in front of an audience of thousands.
Hundreds of entries are received each year, bringing an array of talented singers and drawing the community into possible stardom. Past contestants have come from all walks of life – a minister, banker, retail sales associate, hotel front desk clerk, realtor – from the age of 18 to 80.
The Palm Beach PopStar competition begins with videotaped auditions submitted for evalution by the management and staff of The Palm Beach Pops. There will also be open call auditions at local restaurants/bars including John Bull English Pub in West Palm Beach.
Up to 15 contestants are chosen to compete in the final competition. Finalists will perform a song on stage in front of a panel of judges made up of local celebrities, puiblic figures and local music experts. The general public is invited to attend The Palm Beach PopStar Finals, a free community event, at a local venue.
In addition to a cash prize and other gifts, the winner will perform live on stage in front of thousands with Bob Lappin and The Palm Beach Pops in November at their opening concert series titled “Let It Be...The Beatles” for six nights. Concerts are at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach; the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton; and the Eissey Campus Theatre at Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens.
The first Palm Beach PopStar winner, Cory Marin of Tequesta, has furthered his professional singing career and created his own show that he performs around the area. The most recent Palm Beach PopStar winner, Daniel Cochran of West Palm Beach, performed with The Palm Beach Pops and the incomparable Judy Collins. Daniel is now with the Miami Dolphins Voices, an elite group of 12 singers, which are the NFL’s first professional a cappella group, performing the National Anthem at all Dolphins home games and a variety of songs at community and charity events across South Florida.
