Music & You In-School Youth Education Program

All across America, students have limited access to the arts in schools. The Palm Beach Pops contends that all children deserve the chance to benefit from meaningful arts experiences, despite school budget cuts. The Pops is devoted to serving the children in our community by presenting quality music education programs.

The Pops created the Music & You In-School Youth Education Program to expose students to new learning experiences and positive role models while developing creativity, providing tools for communication and enabling students to build a strong sense of self.

In addition, studies have shown that involvement in music develops and strengthens problem-solving skills, integrates subject matter across the curriculum, and correlates highly with overall academic achievement.

The Music & You Education Program (originally titled the GRAMMY® Concert Series for Children) was launched in partnership with the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). Since the program’s inception in 1998, over 71,000 Palm Beach County students have participated with 100% of its funding raised by The Palm Beach Pops.

The Pops is dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of America’s great composers and lyricists and the celebration of the great performers of the past and present by introducing children to the music of the Great American Songbook.

Bringing the Magic of Music to YOU!

Palm Beach County students have the opportunity to participate in the Music & You Education Program at NO COST to the students, parents, teachers, schools or county. This program is developed for 2nd thru 5th grade students, incorporating hands-on experience with real musical instruments, workbooks and professional musicians.

Each in-school ensemble features four to five musicians from The Palm Beach Pops orchestra, led by the “Music Man,” a character who creates an exciting atmosphere for the children. The lessons are presented in an engaging, lively style that encourages the young audience to get involved. The culmination of the series is a live concert featuring the Music Man, Maestro Bob Lappin and The Palm Beach Pops orchestra at Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach. One student from each school will be invited to participate on stage.

During this 4-week program, students will:
• Gain rich and diverse musical experiences in a weekly classroom ensemble with musicians from the Palm Beach Pops orchestra.
• Receive a 16-page workbook.
• Learn about melody, rhythm and harmony.
• Study some of our great composers such a Bach, Mozart, Ellington and Gershwin.
• Discover the four sections of the orchestra: brass, woodwinds, strings & percussion.
• Receive a keepsake Palm Beach Pops T-shirt to wear the day of the finale concert.

Teachers are provided a curriculum guide with information to prepare students for weekly sessions. The guide explains how music, melody, rhythm and harmony work together and contains composer biographies along with classroom exercises.

The comprehensive music program, benchmarked to Florida Sunshine State Standards, correlates music with social studies, literature, character education, science and math to enhance major academic disciplines.
